Obituary for Mr. Edward Helms
Edward Earl Helms, US Navy Retired, age 76, of Martin, passed away Monday, September 2, 2019 following an extended illness.
Born April 14, 1943, in Eureka, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Carson and Aileen (Rowsey) Helms. He was a retired veteran of the US Navy, where he proudly served for 32 years, including service during Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the Gulf War. After his retirement from the Navy as a Master Chief, he was the post commander for the Lavonia VFW Post 5897. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son: David Helms; brother: Falcom Helms; and granddaughters: Trina Helms and Taylor Williams.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Nancy (Patrick) Helms of the home; daughters & sons-in-law: Regina & Harry Walters of Folkston and Lori & Curtis Ginn of Carnesville; daughter-in-law: Teresa Helms; sister & brother-in-law: Janice & Vic Wardlaw; brother & sister-in-law: Ronnie & Donna Helms; grandchildren: David Helms, II, Scott Lawrence, Shanna Williams, Mercedes Goldsmith, Christopher Gray, Whitney McCormack, and Logan McCormack.; and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Helms was cremated in accordance with his request. The family will hold a private memorial service at the Lavonia VFW Post 5897. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org), the Autism Society (www.autism-society.org.), or VA Medical Centers (www.volunteer.va.gov).
